About Us

Cherokee Elementary is the second-largest elementary school in Rapides Parish.  Established in 1955, our school has grown exponentially over the years.  A new wing was added in 2005 - which now houses our fourth grade classes and our art classes.  Our campus also holds two multi-class modular buildings - which house fifth grade, kindergarten, and first grade - and several smaller portable buildings - which house various classes and special programs.  We are set to begin construction on an additional building sometime in the near future.

Current Statistics:

  • 565 students (PreK through 5th grade)
  • 75 total staff members
  • 40 classroom teachers
  • Programs for students with high academic needs
  • Program for students for whom English is a second language
  • Currently offering free breakfast and lunch to EVERY student

Our goal and mission is to teach the WHOLE child - with extra-curricular activities such as art, music, STEM, and sports.

Tribe System

At Cherokee, each student and staff member as sorted into a tribe or family group.  These tribes are Honovi, Lakota, Makwa, and Tatanka.  Each of our four tribes is symbolized by an animal symbol, colors (one main color.one accent color), and core values.  Each person remains in the same tribe throughout their years at Cherokee.  Although there is healthy competition between the tribes, we understand that we are all a part of Cherokee  we often say,
